First, the director has to invite actors and actresses to his studio to rake a screen test. He pick his cast and decides who is going to get star billing. After that process, he has to hire people to be in charge of lighting, music, special effects, costume design, makeup, food, and finances. He'll also need cameramen, and perhaps someone to do stunts. Many scenes can be shot in the studio, but often the director has to arrange to move all the equipment and cast to another location. There, he may hire some extras to act in crowd scenes. After the filming is finished, the movie has to be edited. When it's finally finished, the director has to wait until the movie comes out in theaters.
